It’s been a little while since I’ve written a blog post, and honestly, I think that’s fitting for what I want to talk about today.
The last couple of months have been full. We’ve been traveling, making memories, working, spending time as a family, and getting ready for a whole new season of life. In the middle of all of that, my routines haven’t looked exactly like they normally do, and I’m guessing I’m not the only one.
Everywhere I look right now, people are talking about getting back on track. Back-to-school season has a way of doing that. Schedules become more predictable, calendars fill up, and there seems to be this collective feeling that it’s time to reset.
I get it.
As much as I love summer, I also love what this time of year brings. There’s something comforting about having a routine again. Not because life has to be perfectly planned, but because having a little structure helps me feel more like myself. For so many years, I thought I needed the perfect Monday, the first of the month, or January 1 to make a change. If I missed a workout or had an off week, I’d tell myself I’d start over later.
The problem with that mindset is that ‘later’ has a way of turning into weeks or even months. I’ve learned that you don’t need a perfect starting point. You just need to make your next decision a good one.
Maybe that’s choosing to go for a walk after dinner instead of sitting on the couch. Maybe it’s adding a little more protein to your meals. Maybe it’s putting your phone down a little earlier so you can actually get enough sleep. Or maybe it’s finally walking into the gym after telling yourself for months that you’ll start ‘soon.’
None of those things feel huge in the moment. But that’s exactly the point. The habits that change our lives usually aren’t the exciting ones. They’re the ones we repeat over and over again, even when no one is watching.
One thing I’ve realized over the years is that wellness doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You don’t have to overhaul your entire life because one season looked different than another.
Summer may have looked like more ice cream, later nights, vacations, and less structure. That’s called living.
Now maybe this season looks like meal prepping again. Getting back into strength training. Taking evening walks with your family while the weather is still nice. Drinking more water. Going to bed before you’re completely exhausted.
It’s not about making up for the summer. It’s about moving forward.
The truth is, there will always be another vacation, another birthday party, another busy week at work, another reason to put your goals on hold. Life isn’t going to suddenly become less busy. That’s why I’ve stopped waiting for the ‘perfect’ time to start. I’m choosing to begin with whatever today looks like.
As I’m writing this, we’re getting ready for Hilton to start preschool, and if I’m being honest, it’s making me think about fresh starts in more ways than one. She’s beginning a brand new chapter, and in a way, I feel like I am too. Maybe you’re in a season that feels new too.
Whether your kids are going back to school, your schedule is changing, or you’re simply ready to feel a little more like yourself again, I hope you’ll remember this:
You don’t have to wait until January to start becoming the person you want to be. You can start today.
Before you close this page, choose one habit you’ll commit to for the next 30 days. Keep showing up, even when the excitement wears off. Those small choices have a way of turning into real routines. And over time, those routines can completely change your life.
Here’s to fresh starts, wherever you find them.
Until next time,
Brooke
